Dirty Dozen

« Back to Glossary Index

Dirty Dozen is a list of twelve crops most heavily sprayed with harmful chemicals like fertilizers, pesticides, and insecticides in the country. The chemical residues of this contamination then makes the consumer vulnerable to toxic exposure. You definitely do not want to eat non-organic produce from this list. To reduce your toxic pesticide exposure, we recommend consuming organic produce as much as possible or, at least, choose fruits and vegetables found in the Clean Fifteen list.

Both the Clean Fifteen and Dirty Dozen produce lists are maintained by Environmental Working Group. EWG scrupulously tests samples of about fifty crops from all over the country and lists them in order from the most to the least contaminated. Carry the Dirty Dozen and Clean Fifteen lists with you to grocery shopping.
